When I Became A Man

Growing up wasn’t hard to do.
Growing pains only lasted a day or two.
Time simply seemed to go by to slow.
Yet one day we all grow up.

Going out on dates.
Hanging out with the guys.
Fishing on the weekends.
Parties on Friday nights.

Sleeping late on Saturdays.
Drinking beer on Saturday nights.
Dressing up for Sunday School.
Sitting all proper in Church.

Growing up wasn’t hard to do.
Growing pains only lasted a day or two.
Time simply seemed to go by to slow.
Yet one day we all grow up

Senior Trip down south was a blast.
Senor Skip day off to the city to play.
Prom dressed up flowers and a date.
Holding her close and kissing her.

The night never lasted long enough.
Yet the memory always will.
Driving off from taking her home.
You wish you could have spent all night.

Growing up wasn’t hard to do.
Growing pains only lasted a day or two.
Time simply seemed to go by to slow.
Yet one day we all grow up

Off to college you think you are cool.
Now you are ready to break some rules.
Cut classes and there goes your future.
Join the Military; it’s a war not love in that future.

Nineteen you become a man.
It’s your first day in a land called Vietnam.
You climb in the Helicopter with the bag on your side.
You are about to save your first life.

Wouldn’t stay long in that forbidden hell zone.
You would just help the worse get out.
They were all going home.
You are the angel they were waiting for.

Growing up wasn’t hard to do.
Growing pains only lasted a day or two.
Time simply seemed to go by to slow.
Yet one day we all grow up

You finallyget home.
You hold on to your Mother real tight.
And that hand shake you always gave your Dad.
Becomes bear hug and and an “I Love You Dad.”

In your dreams you see them all.
In your waking hours you hear them all.
Many years you are carrying each one in your heart.
That was the day you grew up.

Growing up wasn’t hard to do.
Growing pains only lasted a day or two.
Time simply seemed to go by to slow.
Yet one day we all grow up

To those I remember and those I have lost. I tried my best to be a man.
